CARBON

Carbon steel is more commonly used than any other metal, and has long been preferred for its versatility and low cost.

As a specialist in scheduled and non-scheduled heavy wall pipe and tube, U.S. Tube Supply stocks a complete size range of carbon steel pipe and tube up to 48” OD. We offer multiple grades of carbon steel to ASTM, ASME and API specifications.

Construction types include seamless, welded, or welded and drawn. Seamless tubing has no seam or weld point, which enables it to better withstand high pressure and resist corrosion. Welded tubing, made by rolling and welding metal sheet stock, is weaker than and not as rounded as seamless tubing, but it has a more consistent wall thickness for tighter wall tolerances. Welded and drawn tubing, also known as “drawn over mandrel” (DOM), is typically welded tubing that is drawn through a die and over a mandrel to create a smooth inner diameter, which gives the tubing comparable corrosion resistance to seamless tubing while still offering welded tubing’s tighter wall tolerances.

ASTM A106 is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. U.S. Tube Supply stocks a full range of grades B/C in a size rage of NPS .25″ to NPS 30″.

API5L Line pipe grade designations come from API Spec 5L Specification for Line Pipe. Standard Line Pipe has grade designation A and B. Stronger grades have the designation X followed by the specified minimum yield strength of the pipe steel, measured in kilopounds per square inch e.g. X60 for pipe having a minimum yield strength of 60 ksi.

ASTM A53 pipe is used for structural and pressure applications. It exhibits good strength and is easily coiled, bent and welded.

A500 is a good steel alloy for structural applications. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and is ductile. It bends, flattens, cuts, punches, flares and flanges easily, and offers superior weldability.
